The iPhone XR was launched starting at Rs 76,900 in India going up to Rs 91,900. The price drop makes the XR a little more affordable, although "affordable" is a pretty relative term here. Yes, the XR is cheaper than the iPhone XS and XS Max, but it still carries an ultra-premium price tag compared to its competition.

The iPhone XR is the most affordable iPhone in Apple's latest lineup, which also consists of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Physically, the iPhone XR sits between the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max and packs a 6.1-inch display. It lacks the dual-camera setup found on the more expensive duo but does offer features like Portrait Mode. In terms of battery life, our tests show that the iPhone XR offers the best experience among the 2018 iPhone trio. The iPhone XR is powered by the Apple A12 Bionic chip, same as the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

In terms of size, the iPhone XR slots between the iPhone XS and XS Max. It gets a 6.1-inch LCD Liquid Retina HD display (1792x828). It is powered by the A12 Bionic chipset and brings 3GB of RAM. The iPhone XR also supports Face ID and ships with iOS 12. The phone gets a single 12MP wide-angle camera on the back and comes with OIS and f/1.8 aperture. The front sees a 7MP TrueDepth camera similar to the XS and XS Max.

The Apple iPhone XR supports wireless charging.
As far as the cameras are concerned, the Apple iPhone XR on the rear packs a 12-megapixel camera with an f/1.8 aperture. The rear camera setup has autofocus. It sports a 7-megapixel camera on the front for selfies, with an f/2.2 aperture.

Apple iPhone XR based on iOS 12 and packs 64GB of inbuilt storage. The Apple iPhone XR is a dual-SIM (GSM and GSM) smartphone that accepts Nano-SIM and eSIM cards.

Connectivity options on the Apple iPhone XR include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, Bluetooth v5.00, NFC, Lightning, 3G, and 4G (with support for Band 40 used by some LTE networks in India) with active 4G on both SIM cards. Sensors on the phone include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, and compass/ magnetometer. The Apple iPhone XR supports face unlock with 3D face recognition.

The Apple iPhone XR measures 150.90 x 75.70 x 8.30mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs 194.00 grams. It was launched in Black, Blue, Coral, White, Yellow, and PRODUCT (RED) colours. It features an IP67 rating for dust and water protection.

According to research, the number of iPhones shipped in India fell 40 per cent in 2018 compared with 2017, and Apple's market share in the country dropped to about one per cent from about two per cent.
Earlier this week, Apple also lowered the prices of several products in China, including the latest iPhones, iPads, and AirPods. The price cuts appeared to be due in part to a reduction in China's value-added tax (VAT), but any price cuts in China should be good news for Apple as it seeks to bolster sales there, too.

Last quarter, Apple issued a revenue warning due to "fewer iPhone upgrades" than it anticipated and "significantly greater" than expected economic weakness in the Greater China region. Apple had already discounted iPhone prices at third-party resellers in China to improve results.

If the Apple iPhone XS and XS Max come across as the more serious members of the family, the iPhone XR seems like the younger sibling that just wants to have fun. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you see the multitude of bright hues the iPhone XR comes in. While my review unit was black, you can opt for coral, orange, white and yellow colourways along with the iconic (PRODUCT) RED. These colours stand out in a sea of similar-looking handsets, and can possibly find many takers in the same vein as the iPhone 5C. Furthermore, the iPhone XR continues to offer a glass-back design which looks and feels premium, though the panel attracts fingerprints and smudges. Thankfully, the aluminium sides offer a robust feel and the phone offers an IP67 rating against dust and water (the iPhone XS and XS Max offer better IP68 certification).

If you are wondering what differentiates the iPhone XR from the XS and XS Max, you just need to flip the handset. Instead of dual cameras on the rear, the iPhone XR ships with a single shooter at the back. However, the 12-megapixel f/1.8 snapper is the same as the primary shooter on its siblings, which ensures that image quality is still top-notch. Add to it features like Smart HDR, and the phone offers impressive photos, albeit oversaturated ones (something which Samsung does a slightly better job of). In terms of videos, you get the ability to capture up to 4k videos at 60fps as well as slow-mo clips at 240fps. Along with stereo speakers, the handset can record stereo sound as well thanks to four built-in mics.

The price reduction comes after iPhone prices were lowered in China for the second time this year, as Apple wrestles with a prolonged sales slowdown in the world's largest smartphone market partly due to a slowing economy.

In India, Apple's iPhones are up against the more competitive pricing of rival handsets from South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and China's OnePlus.

"The focus of this entire (price cut) exercise is to win customers who would have thought of going to Samsung or OnePlus, to make them think whether they can spend some extra money on an iPhone XR - it's more bang for the buck," said Rushabh Doshi of tech research firm Canalys.
