Airtel wifi calling

Airtel emerged as the first telecom company to bring Wifi calling support to India. The service was launched last month and Airtel has updated the list of cities in which their Wifi Calling service will be available. Here is a step-by-step guide to enable Airtel Wifi calling on your Android and iOS devices.

What is Wifi Calling?

Wi-Fi Calling is a High Definition (HD) voice service that uses a High-Speed Internet connection to let you make and receive calls over a Wi-Fi network.

The benefits of Airtel Wi-Fi Calling:

It's included at no additional charge with your existing voice plan and HD voice-compatible device.
You make and receive calls with Wi-Fi using your phone number.
It helps you connect when cellular service isn't available or you're having poor signal issues, like dropped calls.
Wi-Fi calls to US numbers are free, even while traveling internationally.
Video Calls no longer need an LTE connection to be initiated in Wi-Fi.
Can I use Wi-Fi Calling when I'm having problems like dropped calls and poor signal strength?
Yes. If you're dropping calls or can't connect due to weak cellular network signal coverage, turn on your device's Wi-Fi Calling feature. Your device then uses a Wi-Fi connection from your home Wi-Fi or a Wi-Fi hotspot you're near so you can make calls as usual. There's no extra charge for Wi-Fi calls.

Eligibility Requirements

Who is eligible for Airtel Wi-Fi Calling?

To be eligible for Wi-Fi Calling, you need to:

  • Have a phone that's HD Voice-enabled and Wi-Fi Calling-capable.
  • All currently available smartphones are HD-voice-capable.
  • Have the HD Voice feature on your account and activated
Note: If you have any features that are incompatible with HD Voice, you'll need to remove them before you add the HD Voice feature to your account. Find out about which features aren't compatible with HD Voice, or learn more about HD Voice and how to activate it.

Pricing

How much does Wi-Fi Calling cost?

The Wi-Fi Calling feature is available at no additional charge and is included in your existing monthly voice plan. Your Wi-Fi calls to US numbers, regardless of where you are located, are also free of charge. Wi-Fi calls to international numbers are billed as "International Calling". If an international rate plan exists on your account, international calls are billed at those rates. A Wi-Fi Calling icon will appear on your screen during the call to confirm that it is using Wi-Fi to connect it. If the call is using the Verizon or a roaming network, standard voice charges apply.
Does Wi-Fi Calling consume data?
Yes, so charges may apply if the Wi-Fi network you're connecting to charges an access fee. The charges will depend on your Wi-Fi access point's access fee.

How much data will a Wi-Fi call use?

Voice calling uses about 1 MB/minute of data. A 1-minute video call typically uses about 6-8 MB of data. The actual data usage of your voice or video call may vary.
Wi-Fi Calling Setup and Use

How do I enable Wi-Fi Calling on my Android™ device?

To activate Wi-Fi Calling, you must activate HD Voice (also called Advanced Calling on some devices) on your Wi-Fi Calling-capable smartphone first, then set up an address for use in the event of an emergency. HD Voice and Wi-Fi Calling need to be activated while on the Verizon network to successfully register.

What if I am not able to spot the Wifi Calling feature on my Android or iOS device?

Sometimes it might occur that you are unable to spot the ‘Make Calls Over Wifi’ setting in the SIM card settings of your device. There might be two primary reasons why you might be facing this issue. The reasons behind you encountering the problem of not viewing ‘Make Calls Over Wifi’ option are:
  • Your smartphone might not support the Wifi calling feature yet
  • Your device might not have been updated to enable calling over Wifi
If you are unable to see the ‘Make Calls Over Wifi’ option due to the first reason, it might make it to your device at some point in the near future. However, there is a possibility that your manufacturer might have pushed out an OTA (Over the Air) update inclusive of the software required to support the feature.

How do I make Wi-Fi calls?

Once you set up Wi-Fi Calling, you'll make Wi-Fi calls like you'd make traditional voice calls. In order to provide you with the most reliable experience, calls will use the cellular network when available. If you're using an Android device, then you can change the preferred network when traveling internationally. For Android devices, you'll see a Wi-Fi Calling icon similar to this:  when your call is over a Wi-Fi network. If you have an iPhone, you'll see "VZW Wi-Fi" in your status bar.

With support for Wifi Calling, users can expect better cellular reception and call connectivity even in the most remote locations.
